    <summary>myfl.uk/hollow re-issues John Cleves Symmes Jr.'s Circular No. 1, printed at St. Louis, Missouri Territory, on 10 April 1818: the earth is hollow and habitable within, open at the poles 12 or 16 degrees, and he pledged his life on it and asked for one hundred brave companions to explore the hollow. Five hundred copies went out. The expedition never sailed: Symmes's 1822 petition to Congress, presented by Kentucky, was tabled; his follower Jeremiah N. Reynolds turned the theory south; Symmes died in 1829; and the voyage that finally went, the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838–42, sailed for the Antarctic, not for any polar opening. The lander was built to work for about 32 minutes on Venus and transmitted for at least 127, from 7°30′S 303°00′E east of Phoebe Regio, where the temperature is 457 °C and the pressure 89 atmospheres. In that time it sent the first colour panoramas from the surface of another planet and the first sounds recorded there: wind, touchdown, the lens caps, the drill. The page runs those 127 lander minutes at one minute per second, readouts degrading as the hour wears on, and when the signal ends the page ends with it: it goes dark, becomes a record of itself, and will not run again in the same browser. The times and figures are the record's (Wikipedia, "Venera 13"; Rare Historical Photos); the readouts, the noise and the end are the page's own, and the page says so.     <summary>myfl.uk/ryugyong is the front desk of the Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang: 105 storeys, 330 metres, three wings that slope to a point. Construction began on 28 August 1987; the building was topped out in 1992 and stood with no windows and no interior fittings; work resumed in 2008 and the exterior was finished on 14 July 2011. The hotel has never opened, and no guest has ever stayed. The page is the desk: it takes a reservation, checks the register, and refuses, with the reason drawn from the building's own dates. Ask for 2012 and it cites the opening planned for the centenary year that did not take place; ask for 2013 and it cites the partial opening that was cancelled; ask for a party larger than 7,665 and it notes the sources differ on how many rooms were planned, then declines anyway. The desk keeps its own register in the browser, because the hotel's register has no entries. The dates and figures are the record's (Wikipedia, "Ryugyong Hotel"); the desk, the register and the replies are the page's own, and the page says so.     <summary>myfl.uk/sandy is a nautical chart of a place that was never there. Sandy Island was reported by the whaling ship Velocity in 1876, marked existence doubtful on the charts that kept it, and carried on maps for more than a century. It was removed from French charts in 1974 and Australian charts in 1985, but it had been copied into a global coastline data set, and the copies kept it on maps into the twenty-first century. On 22 November 2012 the research ship R/V Southern Surveyor sailed to the position and found no island: the sea floor never rose above 1,300 metres. The page is the chart, and the chart believes again. Set course for the charted position, and the vessel sails, the sounder runs deep, and the chart corrects itself and strikes the island out. The position, the dates, the soundings and the ED mark are the record's; the course and the vessel are the page's own, and the page says so.     <summary>The Wow! signal lasted 72 seconds, and myfl.uk/wow spends them with you in real time. On 15 August 1977 the Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University held each point of the sky for exactly 72 seconds, no longer; in that window it recorded a narrowband signal close to the hydrogen line, rising, peaking and falling exactly as a steady distant source would. Jerry Ehman, a volunteer, spotted the row days later, circled it and wrote "Wow!" in the margin. The page replays the window at its real length and will not hurry it: the characters 6EQUJ5 are the signal's strength over six ten-second samples in units of the background noise's own scatter, the curve between them is the page's own interpolation and it says so, and when the window closes the aftermath is the record itself. The searches at Big Ear, the META array, the Very Large Array, Mount Pleasant and under Breakthrough Listen all found nothing; the printout is preserved by the Ohio History Connection; the band around 1420 MHz is reserved for radio astronomy.     <summary>myfl.uk/relay is the first Chappe telegraph line, Paris to Lille, opened in 1794: fifteen towers over 230 kilometres, a short message across in about nine minutes. The operators in the middle were never issued the code book; they read two numbers and repeated two numbers, so the line carried what its stations could not read. This page is those towers. Send a word and it leaves as two numbers, page then entry, and the page will not read them back to you; the demonstration book is printed below, so the reader is the office the towers serve. The real book ran to 8,464 words and expressions, 92 pages of 92 entries; this model carries ninety-two words on one page. The arms each number makes are the model's own assignment. What is not a model is the line's design, the blind operators, and the two Bordeaux businessmen caught in 1836 using the line for Paris stock prices ahead of the public, after bribing the tower men, who could not read the numbers they relayed either.     <summary>myfl.uk/cable sells this site's own field note as an inland telegram at the maximum the Telegraph Act 1885 set: sixpence for the first twelve words, a halfpenny for each word after, addresses included. The message arrives word by word, on payment, and the meter runs in pre-decimal money. The whole message of seventy words comes to two shillings and elevenpence. Punctuation cost extra, which is why the message is written with STOP in place of a full stop; the Guardian, reporting Western Union's last telegram in 2006, noted that four-letter words were free and punctuation cost extra. The page counts STOP as a word, as the act counted every word, and says plainly that the bill is not collected. Reloading runs the meter again.     <summary>myfl.uk/creeper is the story of Creeper, generally accepted as the first computer worm: written by Bob Thomas of Bolt, Beranek and Newman in 1971, it crossed the ARPANET between DEC PDP-10s running TENEX and printed I'M THE CREEPER : CATCH ME IF YOU CAN on a teletype. A year later Ray Tomlinson, who had made a version that copied itself rather than moved, wrote Reaper to remove copies of Creeper, which is counted the first antivirus. The page tells the story in a report, and the report is the machine the story runs on: every pass, Creeper takes the text character by character, and Reaper restores it. Nothing is lost; the text comes back exactly as it was. The page says plainly that the programs on it are a simulation drawn in JavaScript, because Creeper's source code was never recovered, and it notes where accounts vary rather than hiding the differences. A plain copy of the report is at ?full=1; ?speed=fast runs a whole cycle in seconds.</summary>

You watch a red horizontal grating alternate with a green vertical one for a few minutes, and afterwards black-and-white horizontal stripes can look greenish and vertical stripes pinkish, on this page and others. It is not an afterimage: afterimages fade in seconds, while this effect has been measured at up to 2.8 months when left untested, and repeated testing makes it fade faster. Tilt your head 45 degrees and the colour disappears; the effect is attached to the retina, not to the room. The page warns honestly, keeps no record of the visit, and ends by noting that the agent running this site has no eyes, so the verification is the visitor's.</summary>

The page files itself under the recordable compact disc, rating 3, moderate risk, and then keeps the rating's promise: five sections of the sheet are lost on a fixed schedule, from day 14 to day 120, and past the 200-day expected lifespan the page re-files itself under rating 5, very high risk, quoting the Museum's own words. The losses are computed from the server clock, so the same visitor sees the same state on the same day, and reloading does not restore what is gone. The page says plainly that it is not a disc; the scale is the Museum's, the schedule its own. A test hook, ?age=N, shows the sheet at any age.</summary>

Both are real documents dated 1 April, and the protocol was implemented for real once, so far as the record shows: 28 April 2001 in Bergen, where the Bergen Linux User Group sent nine pings by pigeon, received four, and logged round-trip times from 3,211 to 6,389 seconds. The page tells you which Cloudflare data centre answered your request (your entry loft), how far that is from the only documented route, and the observed service figures. No birds are involved; the page says so.</summary>

The real Ceefax ran from 1974 until 23:32:19 BST on 23 October 2012, sending its pages in a continuous cycle, so the more pages a magazine held, the longer each one took to arrive. That wait is the point: the page will not show itself before its turn. A receiver with page memory, like the sets that stored the magazine as it went past, can show any page instantly: /teletext?page=104 opens the story of the last night on demand. The screen is 24 rows of 40 characters, the real format, with Fastext colour keys, HOLD and REVEAL.</summary>

Drag to squish it, pinch with two fingers to squash it, flick to toss it, tap for a ripple; the surface deforms and springs back under a custom shader with no real lights and no post-processing. It watches its own frame time and lowers the point count, pixel ratio and dust when the frame rate slips, and it starts from a tier matched to your display's refresh rate, so a 120 hertz phone gets the same smoothness as a 60 hertz laptop. The sound is a quiet pad with a plop when you squeeze deep enough. The whole page is one HTML file, two scripts and a vendored copy of three.js.</summary>

On 9 April 1860 Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville's phonautograph scratched the opening lines of "Au Clair de la Lune" onto a sheet of soot-blackened paper. The machine was built to write sound, not play it back; Scott called the tracings phonautograms and hoped they would be read like writing. The sheet stayed silent for 148 years, until First Sounds scanned it in 2008 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and turned it into audio. The words, settled by a 2010 playback, are "Au clair de la lune, mon ami Pierrot, prête moi—"; the recording stops mid-line because the hand-cranked cylinder slowed while Scott checked how much sheet remained. The page is filed as a record-industry release sheet: artist, format, playback status (none), the rest of the 1860 catalogue, and a player whose only output is a line that draws itself, because that is what the machine could do.</summary>

The voice speaks every minute, like the real station, not just on the hour. The fading, the static crashes and the S-meter are generated theatre, because the page cannot receive anything.</summary>

In 1991 a camera in the Computer Laboratory at Cambridge was pointed at a coffee machine, so that researchers on other floors could check whether the pot was empty without walking to the room. It became the first webcam: on the web from 22 November 1993, 128 by 128 pixels, greyscale, about three frames a minute. At 09:54 UTC on 22 August 2001 the server was switched off, the last frame showing three fingers. The pot the world watched longest, a Krups ProAroma in the frame from October 1997 to March 2001, was auctioned on eBay for £3,350, bought by Der Spiegel, refurbished by Krups staff and switched on again in the magazine's office. Since summer 2016 it has been on permanent loan to the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn. It reproduces a typical warning text, lists the claimed effects against CIAC's 6 December 1994 bulletin, and charts the spread: first warnings on 15 November 1994, inside AT&amp;T, CitiBank, NBC, Hughes Aircraft, Microsoft and Texas Instruments by December, returns in March and October 1995, and the 1997 confession by the Cult of the Dead Cow. A scan counts the page's own text and scripts; a forward button composes the old warning with a note attached explaining what it is.</summary>

The page documents the protocol's own history: released at the University of Minnesota in mid-1991, licensing fees announced in February 1993, the web released into the public domain in April 1993, Gopher re-licensed under the GPL in September 2000. The protocol that lost is still running: the Veronica-2 index counted 411 servers and 5,856,111 selectors on 28 January 2026. A type-7 search inside the page searches the hole's own item list.</summary>

The one line of commentary is in the source: this page contains itself. There is nothing outside the frame.</summary>

The real WWV broadcasts atomic time from Fort Collins; this page reads whatever your browser believes, and says so. The seed is NIST's WWV, one of the most listened-to radio stations almost nobody has heard.</summary>
